Social capital refers to the attributes and qualities of family, social and community networks that facilitate cooperation between individuals and communities. The quality of these networks and the extent to which individuals are engaged with them are believed to have an impact on the educational and social development of children and young people. Some evidence suggests that the influence of community networks can even help to offset some of the effects of socioeconomic disadvantage. This briefing paper draws on two prominent social capital frameworks to investigate how the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) can be used to investigate social capital and youth transitions. It also explores the impact of social capital on the educational and social outcomes of young people by looking at international studies as well as related research that makes use of LSAY data. The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is a large, nationally representative study that follows youth cohorts for ten years at a time as they transition from school into further study, work and other destinations. With more than 20 years of unit record data, LSAY provides researchers with information for six cohorts of Australian youth, offering insight into the pathways of young people across multiple generations. This well-established study programme provides rich information across areas of school and post-school education, employment, household characteristics and key demographics. LSAY data sets are provided free of charge and supported by a dedicated website containing user guides, technical papers and interactive online summary data tools. This study profile introduces readers to LSAY by providing a brief history of its origin and establishment, before examining its design, data collection methods and survey outputs.

The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) unpack the lives of young Australians as they leave school, enter further study or the workforce and make the transition into adulthood. The information collected from these groups of students, or 'cohorts', is used to better understand what helps or hinders this transition. This includes things like the effect of schools on year 12 completion, whether government benefits like Youth Allowance help students complete their studies, and the factors that help a young person find full-time work sooner.
LSAY is one of Australia's biggest and longest-running panel surveys. More than 60,000 young people have been surveyed since 1995. It's recognised as one of eight core longitudinal data assets in Australia. By providing a valuable resource to explore the longer-term effects of this crisis, LSAY continues to stand the test of time.

The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) follow several cohorts of young Australians as they move through secondary school, into further study, work and other destinations. The LSAY datasets provide an evidence‐based capacity for sophisticated exploration of policy and research questions through insights into individual changes, transitions and trajectories across the life-course of young Australians. This article aims to provide an update on the progress of LSAY, including its history, evolution of the sample, sample maintenance activities, updates to the information collected, developments to the survey, the many uses that have been made of the data and possible enhancements.

In this paper the authors explore the relationship between social capital at age 15 and participation in education and training at age 17. Using data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) 2003 cohort, the analysis shows that social capital does play an important role in influencing educational participation. For both males and females, participation in school-based activities is found to have the greatest influence on participation in education and training, followed by the strength of the relationship students have with their teachers. Of particular interest, the authors find that social capital influences educational participation over and above the effects of background characteristics such as parental education and occupation, geographic location, cultural background and academic achievement.

Combining data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) with external sources has improved the breadth of information available from the survey alone. However, linking to survey data presents several challenges, including the need to obtain consent to undertake the linkage. If the characteristics of those that consent are different to those that do not, then bias may be present in the linked data. This technical paper demonstrates reliable assessment data across several learning domains is possible through data linkage and allows for analyses on how academic achievement across multiple stages of schooling influences a young person's life course.

The report uses data from the well-established Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY), which provides information on the subject choices of Australian youth in Year 12 and allows analysis of those undertaking STEM subjects in school, those commencing post-school study, and those who are working in STEM careers.

The Federal Government has spent considerable effort to meet the perceived shortage of skilled workers with science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) qualifications. While many of these qualifications are undertaken in the higher education sector, there are a number of STEM qualifications in the vocational education and training (VET) sector, particularly in the health, agriculture and trade areas of study. The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) provide an opportunity to investigate the pathways young people (aged 15-25) take from compulsory schooling through post-school education, and finally into the labour force. Information is also collected on factors influencing career choices. This paper uses LSAY data to explore the pathways young people take from VET into STEM occupations, where the leakages occur, and the factors that influence young people to pursue STEM careers. Where relevant, comparisons are made with young people who study STEM qualifications at university. This research points to areas of policy development which may help to increase the number of people pursuing STEM qualifications in the VET sector and going on to pursue STEM occupations. Show less

Information on the background characteristics and lifestyles of young people enables us to understand, and plan for, youth transitions. Linking data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) with external data sources would improve the breadth of information available from the survey, without adding burden to respondents. This project assesses the feasibility of linking National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) scores to LSAY data (which contain data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)). It also determines the similarity between NAPLAN and PISA in measuring underlying academic achievement. This report shows that it is technically feasible to link NAPLAN scores to LSAY records; a linking rate of 98 per cent was achieved for consenting LSAY participants.
